Digital Forensics - Return Visit

Russell May is currently Manager of Joint Projects with the Guidance Software, Inc. based in Pasadena, California. He was the former head of the West Midlands Police Hi-Tech Crime Unit, retiring after 28 years service in April 2002. Russell has been involved in computer forensics for 15 years and has assisted in the investigation of crimes, by recovering evidence from computer storage systems and internet resources. He has first hand experience of presenting forensic evidence in crown court, from simple theft cases to those of murder and international terrorism.

Russell's talk/demonstration will start with a 15 minute PowerPoint presentation outlining the legal requirements when gathering evidence from computer storage devices, the processes involved in data recovery and the subsequent analysis of captured data and presentation to court or tribunal. He will then demonstrate a 'live' forensic networked examination and some methods that can be employed to discover deliberately hidden file content and show how, 'live' forensics can be utilised to capture volatile data when responding to network intrusion incidents.
